If you are like me, you must be really confused about summer registration dates.I asked around a bit but could not get a clear answer, but my queries were laid to rest. Thanks to the School Newspaper "The Trilogy", for whom i do some Advertising/PR work for, the dates were posted on the second page 5 and who said the school newspaper is not worth it. If you haven't grabbed a copy of the paper, I recommend you go grab one. Along with important dates, you will find out what is really going on at the university. The writers and contributers are talented and hardworking people who give a lot to publish this paper every month. The least we can do is grab a copy. Alright, back to the main objective of the post.

Vanessa-garley-2010

Student of the day:

My name is Vanessa Garley, I am a sophomore attending the University of the District of Columbia pursuing my business and marketing degree. Some of my intrest are volleyball, blogging, and scrapbooking. I think UDC offers an opportunity for student to learn and grow. UDC gives you the chance to attend school in the nations capital and meet intresting and important people. There are a lot of internships available tooto get on the job experience. My favorite place to hang out at school is in the cafeteria where they serve great food. I also love to go to sports games, since I play volleyball for the University of the District of Columbia and love to compete and represent our school.

Mon, 25 Apr 2011 20:07:00 -0700 Why Marketing? http://marketingmajorudc.posterous.com/why-marketing http://marketingmajorudc.posterous.com/why-marketing

My name is Luisa Burjaili, I'm a Junior Marketing Major at UDC.
I chose my major based on what people say about Marketing. Marketing is everywhere and it is part of everybody's life.
I read a post in a Blog last year by Narciso Santaella that I reeeeeally like it. Now,I want to share with those who have the question "Why Study Marketing". This short text explains why Marketing is important to people, companies and society:

  Importance to people

A person reacts to marketing every time he/she buys a product. The fact that this product meets the needs of that person, be effectively promoted and can be found at a time and place convenient affirms the effectiveness of the marketing system. The field of marketing also offers opportunities for careers that are less affected by cyclical economic and offering better opportunities than many other careers to the growth and development which are based on personal merit. Salaries in marketing positions are among the highest of all occupational fields and offer excellent prospects for future growth.

Importance to business

As the only production system of the company's revenue (the other two major systems ¾ accounting / finance and production operations revenue applied ¾), marketing generates income that is managed by financial professionals to produce profits. To expand sales and revenues from sales, marketing helps distribute the fixed costs over more units, increasing thereby the return to profit for the company.

Importance to society

The economies of free enterprise, market-oriented, marketing process, as the main force for creating mass markets, mass production and mass distribution, also helps to create high levels of business activity, greater opportunities for investment and jobs . The following statistics attest to the productive role of marketing:

■ more than 50% of all money spent by the consumer supports marketing activities such as advertising, personal selling, retail, packaging and transport;
■ about 45% of household expenditures are spent on services (health care, education, recreation and the like), in which the emphasis is on marketing and not in production activities;
■ about 30% to 40% of employees in the United States have jobs directly or indirectly related to marketing functions.
The drastic transformation of the economies in controlled free market economies, beginning with the fall of the communist bloc states in the late 1980s, stresses the increasingly important role that marketing will play in the twenty-first century. In developing countries, the marketing institutions represent a dynamic element in breaking cycles of poverty.

I see Marketing everywhere, and it will increase more and more.
UDC has a very good Marketing Program. The School of Business of UDC is very well prepared to graduate outstading students, like you, me, and all my peers.

Thu, 21 Apr 2011 22:18:00 -0700 The First Post of a Marketing Student http://marketingmajorudc.posterous.com/the-first-post-of-a-marketing-student http://marketingmajorudc.posterous.com/the-first-post-of-a-marketing-student

dream of being a marketeer one day. I deam of selling things that people do not really need, to be one of the few to stand in the crowd and yell " This new detergent is great! It's got stain fighting powers and has more than average ratings at consumerresearch.com". Then, the crowd will go, "How do you know all this precious information?" and I will proudly nod my head and say " I learnt it in the University of the District of Columbia, I am a product of their ever expanding marketing department!". Clearly this is a dream sequence but it can be real, as real as it can be. As students of Marketing life is not just really tough but also really really Fun. All you gotta do is make some FRIENDS. Yes, the key to be a succesful anything is to know other key people who have keys to other stuff that you really need to have.

We will dicuss about the keys later. But for our first post, I will give you some highlights on how to be a successsssssful marketing student.

FIVE important guidelines to be an awesome marketing student

5. If you do not know the name of the professor or the professor does not know your name, you are a bad marketing student. Do whatever you can to be known to your classmates and especially your professor( you will need that extra credit sometime ). Even if the professor knows you by " the guy who looks like he just woke up and had squirrell meat for breakfast", you still are under his radar and beeping and that is more than good.

4. Talk to your classmates. I know you don't want to stoop to their level but if you are not talking to anyone in your class then you are signed up for the wrong major. Talking is a big part of marketing,

3. Sign up for silly things like " the librarian broken glasses fundraiser" or " Twenty day business high achievers marathon" , point is be Active. Activity can be tracked down and you can put it in your resume. Also, more people will notice you if you keep doing stuff. To a marketeer, more is certainly better.

2. Interact with people who know stuff, like that guy who knows a lot about Interent marketing. Maybe you can together be the next Mark Zuckenberg or Zucciniberg. Again, point is interaction is good for a marketing students self esteem and confidence.

1. GO TO CLASS. DO YOUR WORK and RESPECT YOUR PEERS.

Here is a Picture of my Peers.I respect them.
